When AI enters an organisation, the conversation often starts with the technology. Which tool should we use? What can be automated? How much time can we save? These are relevant questions. But they don’t come first.

The first question is what we want to achieve for the people involved. For the employee. For the customer. For the person who needs to make a difficult decision. Without that direction, we risk becoming more efficient at things that don’t create value.

Leadership means making the direction clear and enabling others to act. With AI, that responsibility becomes even clearer. We need to decide what can be delegated, where human judgement must remain and who is accountable for the consequences.

So don’t start with a list of tools. Start with a conversation in the leadership team: What problem do we need to solve? Who will be affected? How do we know the change will actually make their everyday lives better?

AI can help us do more. Leadership must determine what’s worth doing.
